GLOSSARY PAGES

A page for every term your audience searches before they know your product exists. Each definition is small on its own, but a hundred interlinked entries tell Google — and now LLMs — that your domain owns the topic. Investopedia built an entire business on this pattern.

When to use it

The right play when

  • Your industry has jargon buyers google before they can evaluate you — define it and own the first touch.
  • You're a new domain that needs topical authority fast; fifty interlinked definitions beat five blog posts.
  • AI assistants answer questions in your niche without citing you — clean definitional pages are what they quote.
  • Your docs and blog keep re-explaining the same terms inline; give each one a canonical page to link to.

Build it

Three steps to live glossary pages

01

Import your term list

Paste your glossary from Sheets or import a CSV — term, slug, one-line definition, category, related terms. Every row becomes a /what-is-x page. Source terms from your docs, support tickets, and the gaps in competitor glossaries.

02

AI-fill the full definition

Add a column and let AI expand each one-liner into a proper definition grounded in that row's data — the term, its category, its example, its related terms. Every entry reads like it was written for that term, because it was.

03

Generate and interlink

Hit generate — every term ships as cached HTML at /what-is-x, titles, canonicals and sitemap handled. Your related_terms column becomes the links between entries. Proof the glossary on the private subdomain, then attach your domain to get indexed.

SEO notes

Make it rank

  • Put the definition in the first paragraph and mark pages up with DefinedTerm schema — glossary entries are the format featured snippets and AI answers lift verbatim.
  • Link related terms to each other and from your blog into the glossary. The compounding comes from the internal link graph, not from any single entry ranking.
  • Watch cannibalization: if a term already has a deep blog post, the glossary entry should define it briefly and link to the post, not compete for the same query.

FAQ

Glossary Pages, answered

Isn't a glossary thin content?

Only if every entry is a swapped-noun template. Bring real data per row — a precise definition, category, example, related terms — and let AI expand from those facts. A 200-word page that fully answers "what is a canonical URL" isn't thin; it's exactly what the query wants.

How many terms do I need before this works?

Enough to cover the topic, not a magic number. Topical authority comes from completeness — if someone can learn your niche's entire vocabulary on your domain, you win. Start with the terms your docs and support tickets already use, then mine competitor glossaries for what you're missing.

Do glossary pages actually convert?

Not directly — they're top of funnel by design. Their job is to earn the first visit and the citation, then pass authority to the pages that do convert through internal links. Investopedia turned plain definitions into one of the web's best-known reference brands; the model is traffic and trust, not instant signups.
